Are Altec 515b's really worth this much?

    26 bids, $2000.

    Altec 515 B woofers pair (last) . MINT condition ! | eBay

I've a pair as clean, if anyone wants them. At that price it seems unreasonable to keep them.

3 bidders were still on them at the $1750 mark.

I'm not surprised. I've been watching the 515b auctions for another pair, and it seems to me that someone hoping to pick up some at the prices of just a couple of years ago (me) may have begun to wonder if they are going to be permanently out of reach. There seems to be a sense out there that there is no replacement for 515b's with original cones.

If considered/valued as-new, they haven't quite kept pace with gasoline.

Yep. Mint pairs with international shipping sell for that price on a semi regular basis.

There was a lull in the last 12 months, GFC no doubt, but as pointed out above, originals with 21184 cones are the bomb.

Well if you have any original 515's in Mint Con. w/original cones, Bakelite spiders, they have been selling for around $2000 a Piece !

That's $ 3500-$4000 a pair ! There was a guy on eBay a little while back (December), that looked like he salvaged them from an arena as he had 6 pairs of 515's,612 cabs,288B' and a half dozen 1803's Multi's w/dual throats. And almost everyone of those 515's sold for close to $2000 and a couple a few hundred above that. The whole lot sold for up wards of $40,000.For 50 year old used Altec speakers !

These prices shouldn't surprise anyone here. I hate to see it happen but they are damn well worth it and someone will buy them. Altec's making more money now then when they were in business.

a few years ago, i contacted some magnet manufacturers .

i was told, an alnico slug, like the ones in the 515, would cost between $400 - $500 each.

but only if i bought a half million.

alnico in these, price 2.5 times what they were 10 years ago -

just wondering what is the value of the 16" basket version of 515b. if i understand correctly these were the last one originally made (unless i got a wrong info):

do they rate the same as the older 15" basket versions or not?
